One of our dogs had this lizard cornered under some logs. They freeze when they’re being chased, so I took the opportunity to take a pic of the beautiful blue belly before putting them back. Hopefully it wasn’t too traumatizing :/

Northern women sewing for North American moccasin project: 600 moccasin tops being sewn in memory of missing, murdered indigenous women

Women from across the North are stitching up a storm to prepare for a massive art project. They are part of a group that’s making more than 600 pairs of moccasin tops in memory of Canada’s missing and murdered indigenous women. The beaded works will be displayed as part of a travelling art installation project called Walking with our Sisters. Each pair of moccasins symbolizes the unfinished life of a missing or murdered woman.

Métis artist Christi Belcourt started the project. She said so far, more than 200 pairs have come in. "I’m always emotionally moved when a new pair comes in because I realize that one pair represents a women or a girl," said Belcourt. "People are really putting their love in the work. You can feel it when you hold it in your hand." The moccasin tops will be shown in a winding path on gallery floors. The first exhibition of the moccasin tops will open in Haida Gwaii in B.C. on Aug. 20.

Caryn Drexl born 1980, is a self-taught conceptual and portrait photographer based in north/central Florida, USA. She has a unique approach to taking female portraits. Her style is like the photographic version of Edgar Allan Poe, with its imaginative details and vague sense of discomfort. She openly admits that “Everything I know I learned through trial and error or the internet.” Although she loves the look of film, and does own some vintage cameras, for practicality she prefers working with digital images. And no big cameras either, “I have girly little hands and a dislike for big heavy cameras that’ll break my wrist or my neck, so the littler ones suit me well.”

You can find more of Caryn’s mysteries in her Etsy shop, CarynDrexl.

Mattahan is a painter who uses digital tools to create these surreal depictions of people who inspire him. The paintings are inspired by moments in his own life.
